Who are the Clinic volunteers?

Dec 18th, 2009

The Community Care Clinic exists because of 15 dedicated healthcare professionals who commit two hours per month to treat the uninsured. That does not seem like very much time until you consider that our volunteers all have private practices so they come to the Clinic after regular office hours or on their days off.

Clinic physicians include Dr. Keerthi Kemparajurs and Dr. Ashok Alur who both practice medicine and live in Oldham County. Nurse practitioners are Michael Haun, Teresa Browning and Sheila Throneberry. Nurses who assist regularly are Stephanie Zoeller, Martha Yates, Beverly Zanewicz, Elizabeth Kirkwood, Angela Kent, Julie Adamchik, and our newest volunteer, Monica Sexton. Substitute nurses are Connie Black and Martha Steele. Debra Kennedy is our volunteer receptionist.

It is the nature of a volunteer to want to give without expecting anything. When asked why they want to donate their time, the volunteers all say that it’s because they want to help people get care who would not be able to without the Clinic. Our volunteers are modest and don’t expect to receive a great deal of notoriety for their altruism. They simply recognize that when they give back to the community, everyone benefits. They realize that many Clinic patients have not seen a doctor in years so they are feeling the effects of that neglect.

Because the Clinic volunteers are involved daily in providing medical care, they truly understand the old adage: “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” One volunteer was heard to say, “If we can just get [this patient] on a good care routine and making better health choices, he’ll feel so much better and so will I.” That says it all!
